ABATACEPT
Background and Date of Approval
Abatacept is a biologic immunomodulatory agent indicated for autoimmune inflammatory diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions. It functions by regulating overactive immune responses that damage joints and tissues. Abatacept received U.S. FDA approval in December 2005 for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in adults. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved it in 2007. Subsequent approvals extended its use to juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). By targeting T-cell activation, a central mechanism in autoimmune inflammation, abatacept offers an important therapeutic option for patients with inadequate response to conventional DMARDs or other biologic therapies.
