BUDESONIDE

Background and Date of Approval

Budesonide is a synthetic glucocorticoid medication that acts as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent. It reduces airway inflammation and can help prevent asthma attacks and lower the requirement for rescue inhalers. During treatment with budesonide, your healthcare provider will monitor your symptoms and conduct periodic blood tests to confirm therapeutic effectiveness and identify any potential adverse effects. For patients using budesonide to manage inflammatory bowel disease, your healthcare provider may suggest dietary modifications to support symptom management. Budesonide must not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to budesonide or any of its components. The FDA approved budesonide as an inhalation aerosol for asthma treatment on 22 December 1993.

Uses

Budesonide is primarily used as an inhaler to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by reducing inflammation in the airways. It is also used as a nasal spray to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis and as a rectal foam or enema to treat inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

How is it administered?

To use a budesonide inhaler, shake it well, and breathe out fully. Then, place the mouthpiece in your mouth and inhale deeply and slowly while pressing down on the inhaler to release the medication. Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly. Budesonide nasal spray is used to treat allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps. To use a nasal spray, shake the bottle well and gently blow your nose. Budesonide capsules or tablets are taken orally to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The medication is usually taken once a day, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. Swallow the capsule or tablet whole without crushing or chewing it.

Side Effects

Budesonide can cause side effects such as dry mouth, sore throat, hoarseness, cough, headache, and nausea. Rarely, it can cause more serious side effects, such as allergic reactions, increased risk of infections, and adrenal suppression (which can occur with long-term use at high doses).

Warnings

Budesonide has several warnings that should be taken into consideration before use. It can cause serious side effects, including adrenal suppression, immune system suppression, and increased risk of infection. Long-term use may also increase the risk of osteoporosis, cataracts, and glaucoma. It may also cause psychiatric effects such as depression, anxiety, and behavioural changes. Patients with a history of liver disease or tuberculosis should use budesonide with caution, as it may worsen these conditions.

Precautions

Inform your healthcare provider of any other medications you are taking, and monitor blood sugar levels if you have diabetes. Patients should avoid contact with people with contagious illnesses and report any signs of infection to their healthcare provider immediately.

Word of Advice

Budesonide is a corticosteroid and requires consultation with a healthcare provider before use. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any unexpected side effects during treatment.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using budesonide. Patients with diabetes should monitor blood glucose levels closely, as this medication can affect blood sugar control.

Budesonide is not a rescue medication and should not be used as a substitute for fast-acting bronchodilators such as albuterol. This medicine does not replace established healthy lifestyle practices.

If you have an active infection or are at high risk of infection, your healthcare provider may recommend closer monitoring of your condition or adjustments to your treatment plan. For any concerns or questions regarding your health, consult your healthcare provider.
