Side Effects

Serious side effects of this medication include severe allergic reactions such as rashes, itching, difficulty breathing, and fever. Seek medical attention immediately if you notice any of these symptoms. Common adverse reactions include irregularities in white blood cell count, like decreased leucocytes, increased eosinophils, and reduced platelet count. Patients may also experience loose stools, alterations in liver function, blood tests, and pain at the injection site. Another potential complication is thrombophlebitis, characterized by vein inflammation, which might cause discomfort and pain at the injection site. It is important to promptly report any of these symptoms to your healthcare provider for appropriate evaluation and guidance.

Warnings

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, or penicillins. It is not recommended for premature babies or newborns (up to 28 days old) with blood issues, jaundice, or those under calcium-containing medications. Before taking ceftriaxone, consult your healthcare provider if you had calcium-containing medications, antibiotic-related diarrhea, gut issues like colitis, liver or kidney issues, gallstones, kidney stones, anemia, following a low sodium diet, or experienced symptoms like rash, blistering, or high fever. Transparent communication with your doctor about your medical history and medications is vital for safely using these injections.

Precautions

If you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Ceftriaxone+Sulbactam, as its administration is determined only if essential by your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor if you have liver problems since it is used cautiously in liver patients, and your doctor may determine dose adjustments based on the severity of your liver disease. During the treatment, avoid alcohol, as it can interact with the medication, causing dizziness. Also, refrain from driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness due to the injection. Always seek advice from your doctor for personalized guidance.

Word of Advice

Ceftriaxone+sulbactam injection is recommended only in children of 1 year of age or older. This combination medication has been prescribed to treat bacterial infections, including those where resistance has developed. Complete the entire prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Stopping early may allow the infection to return and become more difficult to treat, as bacteria may develop resistance to the medicine.

Diarrhoea may occur as a side effect. This can be minimised by consuming probiotics such as yoghurt, other fermented foods, and dietary supplements alongside ceftriaxone+sulbactam. Contact your doctor if you notice bloody stools or experience abdominal cramps.

Take the medication with food and drink plenty of fluids to help prevent stomach upset. If you experience an itchy rash, swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing while taking ceftriaxone+sulbactam, stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is sulbactam added to ceftriaxone?

Sulbactam is added to ceftriaxone to enhance its effectiveness against bacteria. Sulbactam acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor, reducing bacterial resistance and allowing ceftriaxone to exert its antibacterial effects more efficiently. This combination helps combat infections caused by bacteria that might otherwise resist ceftriaxone alone.

What is the contraindication of ceftriaxone sulbactam?

Ceftriaxone+Sulbactam for injection is not recommended for patients allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics. Individuals with penicillin hypersensitivity may be prone to allergic cross-reactions.

Is ceftriaxone+sulbactam safe for kidney failure?

Ceftriaxone+sulbactam should be used with caution if you have a history of kidney function because of the elevated likelihood of severe adverse reactions.

What precautions should I take before undergoing blood or urine tests while on ceftriaxone+sulbactam medication?

Inform the tester about your medication when having blood or urine tests on ceftriaxone. Ceftriaxone can affect urine test results and a blood test known as the coombs test.

Are there specific precautions for diabetic patients while on ceftriaxone+sulbactam?

If you have diabetes, you should avoid certain blood glucose monitoring systems that might provide inaccurate readings during ceftriaxone+sulabactam treatment. If using such systems, carefully follow the instructions and inform your doctor. If necessary, consider alternative testing methods to ensure accurate results.
