DOXYCYCLINE,LACTOBACILLUS

Background and Date of Approval

Doxycycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic introduced in 1967, is indicated for treatment of various bacterial infections including respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections. Lactobacillus, a probiotic preparation, is used to restore healthy gut flora, particularly following antibiotic therapy. When doxycycline and Lactobacillus are used together, the probiotic helps mitigate gastrointestinal adverse effects such as diarrhoea that commonly occur during antibiotic treatment.

Uses

The Doxycycline and Lactobacillus combination is commonly used for: Treatment of bacterial infections, such as: Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis) Skin infections (e.g., acne, rosacea) Genitourinary infections (e.g., urinary tract infections, chlamydia) Tick-borne diseases (e.g., Lyme disease) Prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD) Supporting gut health during prolonged antibiotic therapy

How is it administered?

Doxycycline : Administered orally in tablet or capsule form, with typical doses ranging from 100 mg to 200 mg per day for 7-14 days. Lactobacillus : Available in capsules or tablets, usually taken once or twice daily. The recommended dose ranges from 1 to 10 billion CFU per day.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Serious reactions include liver damage and kidney dysfunction. Rare side effects, such as bloating or gas, may occur.

Warnings

It should not be used during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters. Caution is needed in individuals with liver or kidney conditions. Generally safe but immunocompromised individuals should consult a healthcare provider before use.

Precautions

Avoid taking antacids, calcium, or iron supplements as they may interfere with absorption. Doxycycline increases sun sensitivity, so patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure. Generally safe but should be used cautiously in individuals with compromised immune systems

Word of Advice

Take the full prescribed course of doxycycline and Lactobacillus, even if your symptoms improve sooner. Completing the treatment as directed helps reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
