Product Introduction
Curosurf 240mg injection contains poractant alfa, a lung surfactant medication used to treat Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in premature infants. It has improved survival and outcomes in many premature infants. Studies have demonstrated reduction in mortality risk, decreased need for mechanical ventilation, and shorter hospital stays in premature infants with RDS. It may benefit infants at risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease that can develop in premature infants. Poractant alfa exhibits greater stability than certain other surfactant medications, permitting extended storage without loss of effectiveness.
Curosurf 240mg injection is contraindicated in infants with documented hypersensitivity to the medication, as severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis may occur. It should not be administered to infants with severe RDS, as efficacy in this patient population has not been established. The medication is contraindicated in infants with a history of porcine protein hypersensitivity. Use in infants with active bleeding is not recommended, as the medication may increase bleeding risk. Efficacy has not been demonstrated in infants with neonatal pneumonia and meconium aspiration syndrome. Curosurf 240mg injection is not indicated in adults, as it is ineffective in this population.
Uses
Curosurf 240mg injection is used in the following: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)
How it works
Curosurf 240mg injection lowers the surface tension in the lungs by forming a film on the surface of the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs. This film reduces the force of attraction between the water molecules in the alveoli, making it easier for them to stay open.
How to Use
Curosurf 240mg injection is administered through a breathing tube into the infant's lungs. This is called endotracheopulmonary administration. It is a relatively simple procedure that can be done in a hospital setting.
Side Effects
Curosurf 240mg injection causes some side effects like all medications, although not everyone will experience them. Serious: Anaphylaxis Bleeding Pulmonary hemorrhage Intracranial hemorrhage Surfactant protein B deficiency Common Bradycardia Hypotension Hypoxemia (decreased oxygen) Respiratory distress Apnea Froth at the mouth Irritation at the injection site
