Depo-Provera Injection

Depo-Provera Injection is a progestin—a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone. The active ingredient is medroxyprogesterone acetate. This medicine is used to treat menstrual and hormonal disorders, including abnormal uterine bleeding, secondary amenorrhea, and endometriosis. It is also used as part of hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women and to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia. It may be prescribed for certain hormone-responsive cancers, including endometrial and breast cancer, and is available as a long-acting contraceptive in specific formulations.

Common side effects include headache, breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, nausea, changes in menstrual flow, and weight gain. Notify your healthcare provider if these side effects persist or worsen.

Inform your doctor if you have a history of blood clots, liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, breast cancer, or stroke before starting treatment. This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised by your physician.
