Floseal Injection

Floseal injection is a hemostatic matrix formulation designed to control bleeding during surgical procedures. It combines gelatin granules with topical thrombin, forming a dual-action hemostatic agent that promotes rapid, effective blood clotting. This matrix adheres to bleeding surfaces and enhances clot formation when conventional methods such as suturing or cauterisation are insufficient. The mechanism of action involves providing both a mechanical barrier through the gelatin matrix and biochemical activation of clotting through thrombin. It is used across various surgical specialities, including cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic procedures, urology, and general surgery. Floseal injection is beneficial for managing diffuse, oozing, or hard-to-reach bleeding sites, providing surgeons with hemostatic support when precision control of bleeding is required. It should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components, including bovine-derived thrombin or gelatin materials. Potential side effects may include local tissue reactions, swelling, infection risk at the application site, or hypersensitivity responses.

Floseal Injection contains a hemostatic matrix of gelatin granules combined with topical thrombin, offering a two-step clot-promoting mechanism: Mechanical Action: The gelatin granules swell on contact with blood, creating a physical barrier that promotes clot formation and fills irregular bleeding surfaces. Biochemical Action: Thrombin converts fibrinogen (present in the patient’s blood) into fibrin, accelerating the natural clotting cascade and forming a stable clot. Together, these actions allow Floseal to achieve hemostasis quickly, often within 1–2 minutes, making it a highly effective tool in surgical bleeding control.

Like all medical products, Floseal Injection may cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
