Product Introduction

Fonaxel 2.5mg injection contains the active ingredient fondaparinux sodium. It is indicated for the prevention and treatment of blood clots. The medication is administered to patients at risk of deep vein thrombosis, including those undergoing surgical procedures or with extended immobilisation. It is also used to prevent pulmonary embolism, which may develop when a blood clot from the legs or other sites travels to the lungs. Fonaxel 2.5mg injection is used as part of treatment for established deep vein thrombosis. It may be combined with other medicines in the management of acute coronary syndromes, conditions characterised by reduced blood flow to the heart.

Fondaparinux sodium is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to fondaparinux sodium or any component of the formulation. It must not be used in patients with active bleeding disorders, including gastrointestinal bleeding, intracranial bleeding, or other severe bleeding episodes. Individuals with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min) should not receive this medication due to risk of drug accumulation and increased bleeding tendency.

Use in patients with bacterial endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart, is not generally recommended as the medication may not effectively prevent clot formation in this condition. Caution is advised in individuals with a history of ulcerative gastrointestinal disease or other conditions that may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Patients with severe hypertension require careful monitoring and potential adjustment of anticoagulant therapy.

Use in children and adolescents is not generally recommended due to limited safety and efficacy data in these age groups. Fonaxel 2.5mg injection may be used in elderly patients; however, caution is advised as age-related changes in renal function may influence drug clearance.

Uses

Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism (PE) Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS)

How it works

Fonaxel 2.5mg injection is an anticoagulant medication that works by inhibiting a specific factor in the blood clotting cascade. Its mechanism of action involves blocking the activity of factor Xa, which is a crucial enzyme in the coagulation (blood clotting) pathway.

How to Use

Fonaxel 2.5mg injection is typically administered via subcutaneous injection. It is important to follow the dosing instructions as your healthcare provider recommends.

Side Effects

Fonaxel 2.5mg injection causes some side effects like all medications, although not everyone will experience them. Serious: Bleeding Thrombocytopenia Hypersensitivity reactions Spinal/epidural hematoma Common: Bleeding at the injection site Nausea Injection site reactions Fever Low hemoglobin Abnormal liver function tests

Expert Tips

Caution is needed in cases of renal and hepatic impairment while taking Fonaxel 2.5mg injection, and special attention should be given to patients undergoing spinal or epidural procedures due to the potential for hematoma. Monitoring of platelet counts, renal function, and coagulation parameters is essential. Hypersensitivity reactions, pediatric use, and the use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be carefully considered. Elderly patients may require closer monitoring, and potential drug interactions and alcohol consumption should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Patients should exercise caution in activities that may lead to injury due to the increased risk of bleeding.
