Product Introduction
Koselugo 10 mg Capsule contains selumetinib as its active ingredient. It is indicated for the treatment of certain cancers, particularly melanoma (a type of skin cancer) and other solid tumours, including non-small cell lung cancer and ovarian cancer, especially in patients with specific genetic mutations that render cancer cells sensitive to MEK inhibitors. It may be prescribed for patients with advanced melanoma harbouring specific genetic mutations, often BRAF-mutant melanoma. It has demonstrated efficacy in treating plexiform neurofibromas, tumours associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a genetic disorder characterised by tumour growth on nerves. Patients who have experienced severe allergic reactions to selumetinib or any component of this medication should not use it. The medication may cause harm to the unborn baby and is not recommended during pregnancy. Patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions or a history of heart problems may require close monitoring or may not be suitable candidates for this therapy. Older individuals, particularly those over 65 years of age, may have an increased risk of certain adverse effects. Close monitoring for adverse reactions is typically recommended following administration of this medication. The safety and efficacy of Koselugo 10 mg Capsule in children below specific ages has not been well-established.
Uses
Melanoma treatment Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) Solid tumor treatment
How it works
Koselugo 10 mg Capsule is a medication that targets a specific cellular pathway called the MEK pathway, crucial for regulating cell growth. In cancers like melanoma and certain tumors, it blocks this pathway, disrupting signals that promote uncontrolled cell growth. By inhibiting this pathway, it slows down or halts the progression of cancer cells, reducing tumor growth and spread.
How to Use
Koselugo 10 mg Capsule is primarily administered orally, typically in the form of capsules. The healthcare provider will determine the dosage and duration of treatment based on the specific infection and individual factors.
Side Effects
Koselugo 10 mg Capsule causes some side effects like all medications, although not everyone will experience them. Serious: Heart problems Eye problems Interstitial lung disease (ILD) Liver problems Skin toxicities Common: Nausea and vomiting Diarrhea Fatigue Skin rash Swelling or fluid retention
Expert Tips
Regular monitoring of heart function, including ECGs and cardiac assessments, may be necessary due to potential heart-related side effects while using Koselugo 10 mg Capsule. Periodic eye exams are recommended as this medication might cause vision changes or retinal vein occlusion. Patients require monitoring for signs of interstitial lung disease (ILD) or breathing difficulties. Monitoring liver function through blood tests is essential due to the potential for elevated liver enzymes or liver damage. Live vaccines should generally be avoided during treatment due to potential complications. Regular monitoring might be necessary for individuals with existing endocrine conditions. Discuss with a healthcare professional regarding other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, or vitamins, to avoid potential interactions with this medication.
