Product Introduction
Lacoptal 10mg Injection contains lacosamide, an anticonvulsant medication indicated for partial-onset seizures (seizures affecting one part of the brain) in adults and children from 1 month of age onwards. It is also used in combination with other medications to manage primary generalised tonic-clonic seizures (formerly termed grand mal seizures, affecting the entire body) in adults and children aged 4 years and above. Lacoptal 10mg Injection is frequently prescribed as adjunctive therapy alongside other antiepileptic drugs when current medications do not provide adequate seizure control. This makes it a relevant treatment option for patients whose seizures remain inadequately controlled with existing medication alone.
Lacoptal Injection is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to lacosamide or any component of the formulation. Allergic reactions may be severe, presenting with rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing. The medication is generally well-tolerated, though side effects may occur in some patients. Common side effects including dizziness and nausea are typically mild and may diminish with continued use. Lacoptal 10mg Injection should be used with caution in patients with a history of cardiac arrhythmias. The medication can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. While beneficial for many patients, there is a potential risk of dependence associated with this medication. This risk may be elevated in patients with a previous history of substance use disorder involving excessive use or dependency on drugs or alcohol. To minimise complications, strict adherence to the prescribed dosage is essential, and the dose should not be increased, taken more frequently, or used for longer than recommended by your healthcare provider.
Uses
Lacoptal 10mg Injection is used in the treatment of the following: Seizures
How it works
Lacoptal 10mg Injection works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It is thought to do this by blocking the movement of sodium ions into neurons. This prevents neurons from firing too quickly, which can help to prevent seizures.
How to Use
The drug is given via intravenous (IV) injection, offering flexibility in dosing and administration. The recommended dosage and administration of Lacoptal 10mg Injection depend on the patient's age, weight, medical condition, and response to other medications. Patients must follow their healthcare provider's instructions carefully and attend regular check-ups to monitor the drug's effectiveness.
Side Effects
Lacoptal 10mg Injection causes some side effects like all medications, although not everyone will experience them. Serious side effects of Lacoptal 10mg Injection are: Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing) Suicidal thoughts or behaviors Mood changes (anxiety, irritability, aggression, depression) Changes in cognitive function (difficulty concentrating, memory problems) Cardiac effects (changes in heart rate, rhythm, or conduction) Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to light) Worsening seizures Vision changes Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a rare and severe skin reaction) Multi-organ hypersensitivity syndrome (DRESS syndrome) Blood disorders (thrombocytopenia, leukopenia) Common side effects of Lacoptal 10mg Injection are: Dizziness Headache Nausea Vomiting Blurred vision Diplopia (double vision) Tremor Fatigue Insomnia Abnormal coordination Constipation
