Product Introduction

Menveo injection is a prescription vaccine indicated to provide protection against invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W-135, and Y. These bacteria can cause severe and potentially life-threatening infections including meningitis (inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood infection). The vaccine's active components comprise purified polysaccharides from each meningococcal group (A, C, W-135, and Y) that are chemically conjugated to a carrier protein. This formulation enhances immune response, enabling the body to develop robust and sustained immunity. Menveo is indicated for protection of infants, children, adolescents, and adults at risk of meningococcal infection. Dosing schedules vary according to age and prior vaccination history, with recommendations determined by healthcare providers. Menveo is manufactured by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline), a global pharmaceutical company.

Uses

Prevention of meningococcal meningitis – a serious infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord caused by Neisseria meningitidis groups A, C, W-135, and Y. Prevention of meningococcal septicemia (blood poisoning) – a life-threatening infection where the bacteria enter the bloodstream and spread rapidly. Protection for travellers to high-risk areas, such as parts of Africa’s “meningitis belt” or countries requiring proof of vaccination for entry (e.g., Saudi Arabia during Hajj and Umrah). Immunisation of people with certain medical conditions, including those with a weakened immune system, spleen removal (asplenia), or certain complement deficiencies.

How it works

This vaccine protects against four types of meningococcal bacteria (A, C, W-135, Y) by helping your body make antibodies. These antibodies quickly recognise and destroy the bacteria if you’re exposed, preventing serious infections like meningitis and blood poisoning.

Side Effects

Common: Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site Mild fever Headache Fatigue or tiredness Muscle or joint pain Irritability (in young children) Serious (get medical help immediately): Severe allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling of face/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing) High fever Seizures Persistent vomiting or unusual behavior Signs of severe infection such as stiff neck, confusion, or sensitivity to light

Expert Tips

Get vaccinated only by a qualified healthcare professional. Complete the full vaccination schedule for best protection. Inform your doctor if you have fever, illness, or immune system problems before vaccination. Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines or vaccines you’ve recently taken. Stay for at least 15 minutes after the shot to monitor for allergic reactions. Mild pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site is common and usually goes away in a few days. Keep your vaccination record safe for future reference.

Safety Advice

Pregnancy: Consult Your Doctor Menveo vaccine should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider. While there is no evidence of harm to the unborn baby, data on its use in pregnant women is limited. Your doctor will weigh the benefits of protection against meningococcal disease against any potential risks.

Lungs: Consult Your Doctor People with chronic lung diseases, such as asthma or COPD, can usually receive the Menveo vaccine safely. However, your doctor will review your respiratory health and current condition before administration, especially if you have an active lung infection or severe breathing difficulties.

Breastfeeding: Consult Your Doctor Menveo Vaccine is generally considered safe during breastfeeding, but data is limited. Always check with your doctor before vaccination.
