Product Introduction

Merozyme DT Injection contains Meropenem and EDTA as active components. Meropenem is a carbapenem antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It is prescribed for serious infections including complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, bacterial meningitis, and pneumonia, among others. EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent that binds to metal ions and is used in clinical and laboratory settings. In this formulation, the combination of Meropenem and EDTA is utilised to enhance the effectiveness of the antibiotic. EDTA may serve purposes such as maintaining drug stability or enhancing activity against certain bacteria.

Patients with a history of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to Meropenem or other beta-lactam antibiotics (such as penicillins or cephalosporins) and EDTA should avoid this medication. It should be used with caution or avoided in patients with conditions leading to imbalances in essential minerals like calcium, as EDTA can chelate these minerals and impact their levels in the body. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired kidney function, as both Meropenem and EDTA are primarily excreted via the kidneys. Elderly patients, children, and those with specific medical conditions (such as cystic fibrosis or immunocompromised states) may require special dosage adjustments or closer monitoring during treatment with this medication.

Uses

Merozyme DT Injection is used in the treatment of the following: Pneumonia Complicated skin and skin structure infections Complicated intra-abdominal infections Bacterial meningitis

How it works

Meropenem is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the carbapenem class. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It does this by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are enzymes involved in the final steps of bacterial cell wall synthesis. By binding to these proteins, Meropenem disrupts the formation of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death and ultimately killing the bacteria. EDTA is a chelating agent, meaning it can bind to metal ions. It forms stable complexes with various metal ions, effectively sequestering them. This property of EDTA has many uses, including its ability to prevent metal-catalyzed oxidative reactions and to remove metal ions from solutions. Combining Meropenem with EDTA enhances the efficacy or activity of Meropenem against certain bacteria. EDTA's chelating properties affect bacterial cell wall integrity or permeability, potentially increasing the susceptibility of certain bacteria to the effects of Meropenem.

How to Use

Healthcare professionals typically administer Merozyme DT Injection in a hospital or clinical setting. The injection may be given as a slow infusion or intermittent intravenous (IV), depending on the treatment condition and the healthcare provider's instructions. Before administration, the healthcare professional will assess the patient's patient's medical history, current health status, and any known allergies or sensitivities.

Side Effects

Merozyme DT Injection causes some side effects like all medications, although not everyone will experience them. Serious: Severe allergic reactions (rare but can be life-threatening) Pseudomembranous colitis (a severe intestinal condition caused by Clostridium difficile bacteria) Central nervous system side effects, such as seizures (rare) Decreased blood cell counts (rare) Kidney damage or impairment in cases of overdose or extended use Hypocalcemia or low calcium levels in the blood due to chelation of calcium by EDTA Common: Diarrhea Nausea or vomiting Headache Rash or itching Injection site reactions (if administered intravenously) Changes in blood tests (like liver function tests)

Expert Tips

Patients should inform their healthcare providers about any known allergies or previous adverse reactions to Merozyme DT Injection or other antibiotics. Close monitoring of kidney and liver function is essential, especially in patients with pre-existing conditions affecting these organs. Proper dosage adjustment is crucial, considering factors such as the patient's weight, age, and renal function. Patients should complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if they start feeling better. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare providers before using it. Patients should promptly report any severe or concerning side effects experienced during treatment. This medication should be used cautiously in the elderly and pediatric populations, with dosages adjusted accordingly. These precautions aim to maximize the benefits of this medication while minimizing the risk of side effects and antibiotic resistance.
