Monovisc Injection

Monovisc injection contains Sodium Hyaluronate, an intra-articular agent. It mimics the natural fluid that cushions joints, providing lubrication and protection while acting as a shock absorber. This medicine relieves knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis. It is typically administered to patients who have not responded adequately to other arthritis medications.

Do not use Monovisc injection if you are allergic to Sodium Hyaluronate or any of its ingredients. Do not use this medication if you have an infection in your knee or in the skin around your knee.

Before using this medicine, inform your doctor if you have a history of blood clots or circulation issues in your legs, or if you have an allergy to birds, feathers, or egg products. Notify your doctor if you have pre-existing chondrocalcinosis (cartilage calcification). This medicine is not recommended for patients aged 21 years and younger, as its safety and effectiveness have not been established in this age group.

Before starting Monovisc injection, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Notify your doctor if you have a history of any disease.

Common side effects include pain, redness, stiffness, bruising, or swelling at the injection site, nausea, stomach pain, difficulty walking, back pain, joint pain, muscle pain, numbness or tingling, headache, dizziness, and a runny or stuffy nose.

Treatment for osteoarthritis

Monovisc injection works by providing extra lubrication and cushioning to the knee joint affected by osteoarthritis. It helps reduce friction and protect the joint, which can ease pain and improve movement. The injection replenishes the natural fluid in the joint, providing relief and support for better knee function.

Monovisc injection will be administered to you by a healthcare professional in a hospital setting. Do not self-administer. It is usually administered into the knee joint. Your doctor will decide the dose, route of administration, and frequency based on your disease condition and other factors.

Side effects are unwanted symptoms caused by medicines. Even though all medicines cause side effects, not everyone gets them. Avoid using skin disinfectants that contain quaternary ammonium salts or chlorhexidine along with Monovisc injection, as it may cause hyaluronan to form clumps. After intra-articular injection, avoid strenuous activities and prolonged weight-bearing activities (over an hour) for 48 hours as part of the treatment. Do not stop the medicine until your doctor advises. Do not breastfeed while taking Monovisc injection unless doctor advise. Notify your doctor if you experience any serious side effects.
