Product Introduction
Novomix 50 Flexpen 100IU contains insulin aspart and insulin aspart protamine. This is a combination of two insulin types: insulin aspart (rapid-acting) and insulin aspart protamine (intermediate-acting). It is used to treat diabetes mellitus, a chronic disease characterised by elevated blood glucose levels.
In diabetes, your body does not produce sufficient insulin to regulate blood glucose. Regular blood glucose monitoring using a home blood glucose meter (glucometer) is necessary. Prolonged high blood sugar may cause increased urination, thirst, nausea or vomiting, drowsiness or fatigue, abdominal pain, facial flushing, and fruity-smelling breath (acetone odour). These signs may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition involving blood acid accumulation when the body metabolises fat instead of glucose. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
This injection may cause injection site reactions including pain, redness, itching, or swelling. These reactions are typically mild and resolve independently, but contact your doctor immediately if they persist or worsen.
This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Intravenous administration is not appropriate, as intravenous insulin use may cause hypoglycaemia, hypokalaemia, or other serious adverse effects.
Use Novomix 50 Flexpen 100IU with caution in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment, as insulin requirements may be reduced. Certain medications such as corticosteroids may affect blood glucose control, necessitating insulin dose adjustment.
If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, consult your doctor before using this penfill. During pregnancy, insulin requirements may change, and close blood glucose monitoring is important to maintain optimal glucose control for both mother and developing fetus. If you are already using this injection and become pregnant, do not discontinue insulin without first consulting your doctor. Maintaining adequate glucose control during pregnancy minimises the risk of complications for you and your baby.
Uses
Diabetes Mellitus
How it works
Novomix 50 Flexpen 100IU works by binding to the insulin receptors on the fat and muscle cells and inhibiting glucose release from the liver. It enables the absorption of glucose by the cells and regulates glucose metabolism thereby helping to prevent blood sugar levels from rising too high.
How to Use
It should only be administered by a trained doctor or nurse. It will be given shortly before a meal. Novomix 50 Flexpen 100IU will be given as a subcutaneous injection, which means that the insulin is injected into the fatty tissue just beneath the skin, using a needle and syringe or a prefilled insulin pen device. Your doctor will decide the dose and duration of the treatment based on your disease severity and other factors. Do not self-administer the medication.
Side Effects
Side effects are unwanted symptoms caused by medicines. Even though all drugs cause side effects, not everyone gets them. Serious Allergies Low blood sugar levels Breathing trouble Dizziness Confusion Common Itching Rash Reactions at injection site Weight gain Low potassium levels in the blood
Expert Tips
Novomix 50 Flexpen 100IU comes in a pre-filled pen device that is easy to use and can be carried with you wherever you go. Check the expiration date on the pen device and do not use it if it has expired. Keep a record of your blood sugar levels, insulin doses, and any symptoms or side effects you experience, and share this information with your healthcare provider. Carry a source of fast-acting sugar, such as glucose tablets or juice, with you in case your blood sugar levels become too low. Do not refrigerate or freeze the pen device, and do not expose it to temperatures above 30°C.
