Novomix 50 Penfill 100IU contains insulin aspart and insulin aspart protamine. It is a combination of two insulin types: insulin aspart (rapid-acting) and insulin aspart protamine (intermediate-acting). It is used to treat diabetes mellitus, a chronic clinical disease characterised by elevated blood glucose levels.

In diabetes, your body does not produce sufficient insulin hormone to control blood glucose levels. It is necessary to monitor your blood sugar using a home blood sugar meter (glucometer). When blood sugar remains elevated for prolonged periods, you may experience increased urination, thirst, nausea or vomiting, drowsiness or fatigue, abdominal pain, facial flushing, and a fruity (acetone) odour to your breath. These may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition involving acid accumulation in the blood as your body breaks down fat instead of glucose. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.

This injection may cause injection site reactions, including pain, redness, itching, or swelling at the injection site. These reactions are typically mild and resolve independently; however, if they persist or become severe, contact your doctor immediately.

This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. It is not intended for intravenous administration, as intravenous insulin use can lead to hypoglycaemia, hypokalaemia, or other serious adverse effects.

Novomix 50 Penfill 100IU should be used with caution in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment, as insulin requirements may be reduced in these patients. Certain medications such as corticosteroids may affect blood sugar control, and insulin dose adjustment may be required.

If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, consult your doctor before using this penfill. During pregnancy, insulin requirements may change, and close monitoring of blood sugar levels is important to ensure optimal glucose control for both mother and developing fetus. If you are already using this injection and become pregnant, do not discontinue insulin without first consulting your doctor. Maintaining good glucose control during pregnancy is important to minimise the risk of complications for you and your baby.

Novomix 50 Penfill 100IU works by binding to the insulin receptors on the fat and muscle cells and inhibiting glucose release from the liver. It enables the absorption of glucose by the cells and regulates glucose metabolism thereby helping to prevent blood sugar levels from rising too high.

It should only be administered by a trained doctor or nurse. It will be given shortly before a meal. Novomix 50 Penfill 100IU will be given as a subcutaneous injection, which means that the insulin is injected into the fatty tissue just beneath the skin, using a needle and syringe or a prefilled insulin pen device. Your doctor will decide the dose and duration of the treatment based on your disease severity and other factors. Do not self-administer the medication.

Carry a source of fast-acting sugar, such as glucose tablets or juice, with you in case your blood sugar levels become too low. Do not refrigerate or freeze the pen device, and do not expose it to temperatures above 30°C.
