Product Introduction
Prepixa 2.5mg tablet is a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) belonging to the class of Factor Xa inhibitors. It contains apixaban as the active ingredient. The medicine is used for prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the leg veins), which may progress to pulmonary embolism (clots in the lung blood vessels), in patients following hip or knee replacement surgery. It also reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.
Some formulations contain lactose as an inactive ingredient. Lactose intolerance means the body cannot digest lactose, a sugar present in milk and dairy products. This may cause bloating and abdominal pain. Inform your doctor if you have lactose intolerance before beginning this therapy.
This drug is contraindicated in patients with hepatic disease associated with coagulopathy and clinically relevant bleeding risk. It is not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Inform your doctor of any history of bleeding disorders, liver disease, or kidney disease. Disclose all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal remedies.
This medicine may interact with other anticoagulant medications and increases the risk of spinal or epidural haematoma (blood clot in the spinal canal), particularly if patients undergo spinal procedures or receive spinal anaesthesia. Inform your doctor before any medical procedures, including dental work or surgery, so appropriate precautions can be taken. Clinicians should monitor patients for signs of neurological impairment, such as numbness or tingling in the arms or legs, weakness, or loss of bowel or bladder control. If these symptoms occur, urgent treatment is necessary to prevent further neurological damage.
Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. This medicine is not recommended in pregnant women as it may cause fetal harm. Your healthcare practitioner will conduct a pregnancy test before starting treatment. Discuss effective birth control methods with your doctor and use them for at least two weeks following the last dose.
Uses
Prophylaxis of Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) Prevent blood clots
How it works
It is a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) that works by inhibiting the activity of factor Xa, which is a protein involved in the blood clotting process. Specifically, this drug binds to the active site of factor Xa and blocks its ability to convert prothrombin to thrombin. Thus, preventing the formation of blood clots.
How to Use
Your doctor will decide the dose and duration of the Prepixa 2.5mg tablet based on the disease condition. Always take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended starting oral dose of apixaban is 2.5 mg twice daily. Take the tablet at the same time every day, with or without food. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet. Swallow the whole tablet with water. If you forgot to take the tablet, simply take your next dose at the scheduled time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
