Prepixa 2.5mg tablet is a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) belonging to the class of Factor Xa inhibitors. It contains apixaban as the active ingredient. The medicine is used for prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the leg veins), which may progress to pulmonary embolism (clots in the lung blood vessels), in patients following hip or knee replacement surgery. It also reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.

Some formulations contain lactose as an inactive ingredient. Lactose intolerance means the body cannot digest lactose, a sugar present in milk and dairy products. This may cause bloating and abdominal pain. Inform your doctor if you have lactose intolerance before beginning this therapy.

This drug is contraindicated in patients with hepatic disease associated with coagulopathy and clinically relevant bleeding risk. It is not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
