Prepixa 5mg tablet is a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) belonging to the class of Factor Xa inhibitors. It contains apixaban as the active ingredient. The tablet is used for prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the leg veins), which may progress to pulmonary embolism (clots in the lung blood vessels), in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery. It also reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.

Some formulations of this tablet contain lactose as an inactive ingredient. In patients with lactose intolerance, lactose cannot be digested properly and may cause symptoms including bloating and abdominal pain. Inform your doctor if you have lactose intolerance before beginning treatment.

This drug is contraindicated in patients with hepatic disease associated with coagulopathy and clinically relevant bleeding risk. It is not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Inform your doctor if you have a history of bleeding disorders, liver disease, or kidney disease.
