Categories: Gastroenterology

Conditions: Arthritis

Product Introduction

Sulseas 500mg Tablet contains Sulfasalazine as its active component. It is used to treat certain inflammatory conditions, particularly those affecting the gastrointestinal tract. It functions as a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) in the management of rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder primarily affecting the joints. It helps manage symptoms and targets the underlying disease process, potentially slowing disease progression and joint damage. It is indicated for inflammatory bowel diseases including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. This medication can help maintain remission in inflammatory bowel diseases, reducing the likelihood of flare-ups and improving overall quality of life for patients with these chronic conditions.

Sulfasalazine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to Sulfasalazine or any of its components. It should not be used in patients with complete intestinal or urinary tract obstruction. It is contraindicated in patients with porphyria. Patients with severe blood disorders such as aplastic anaemia or agranulocytosis should not use this medication. It may be used in children under specific circumstances, such as in the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis or other inflammatory conditions. Close monitoring of liver and kidney function is important, and potential interactions with other medications should be assessed.

How it works

Sulfasalazine works by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response that leads to the symptoms seen in these conditions. The 5-ASA component helps reduce inflammation in the gut, while the sulfapyridine component helps to deliver the 5-ASA to the desired site in the intestines.
