Product Introduction

Valticlo 450mg Tablet contains valganciclovir as its active component. It belongs to the antiviral (non-HIV) drug group. Upon administration, valganciclovir is metabolised to ganciclovir, which acts against viral infections. It is used to treat adult patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) presenting with cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis. Cytomegalovirus infection frequently causes blindness and visual impairment. It also prevents cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections in organ transplant recipients such as kidney and heart recipients, in both adults and children who carry the virus.

Valticlo 450mg Tablet is not recommended in individuals with known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to valganciclovir or any of its components. Safety and effectiveness of Valticlo 450mg Tablet for treating CMV infection in non-immunocompromised adults, as well as for congenital or neonatal CMV disease, have not been established and therefore it is not recommended for these populations.

Inform your physician if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Breastfeeding is not advised whilst taking Valticlo 450mg Tablet as it may cause fetal harm. Females and males of reproductive potential should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 30 days and 90 days after completing Valticlo 450mg Tablet respectively, owing to the drug's potential for mutagenic and teratogenic effects. Your physician may recommend a barrier form of contraception, such as a condom or diaphragm.

Inform your doctor if you have previously undergone radiation therapy, hemodialysis (a procedure that removes water and waste products from the blood), or have other renal disorders. Dosage adjustment of Valticlo 450mg Tablet will be provided if you have kidney conditions. Your doctor may perform regular blood tests to monitor blood count during treatment. Inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking, including herbal and vitamin supplements and over-the-counter medicines, before starting treatment.

How it works

After oral administration, Valticlo 450mg Tablet is rapidly converted to ganciclovir by intestinal and hepatic esterases. Ganciclovir is the active form responsible for inhibiting viral replication. Ganciclovir inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA, stopping the cytomegalovirus from replicating. This inhibitory action helps stop the virus from spreading throughout the body by lowering the viral load in infected cells. Ganciclovir is selectively harmful to cytomegalovirus-infected cells due to preferential phosphorylation by viral kinases. This targeted approach primarily targets infected cells while reducing harm to healthy cells.
