Product Introduction
Vaptan 15mg Tablet contains the active ingredient tolvaptan, a vasopressin antagonist. The medicine works by increasing water excretion in the urine, promoting aquaresis (water loss without electrolyte depletion) and reducing urine osmolarity (urine concentration), which raises serum sodium concentration. Close monitoring of blood sodium levels is necessary during treatment. Patients should maintain adequate water intake to prevent dehydration, unless fluid restriction has been advised. In such cases, guidance from a healthcare provider is recommended.
Before commencing treatment, inform your doctor of any kidney or liver disorders, or known allergies to tolvaptan, benzazepine, or related benzazepine derivatives. This medicine is contraindicated in patients with anuria (absent urine production), hypovolemic hyponatremia (concurrent reduction in total body water and sodium), hypernatremia (elevated blood sodium), and those with absent thirst sensation. Discussion of your complete medical history with your doctor is essential prior to treatment initiation.
Safety and effectiveness in children below 18 years of age have not been established. Consultation with a doctor is advised before administering this medicine to paediatric patients.
Uses
Hyponatremia (Low sodium levels in the blood) Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease [ADPKD]
How it works
Tolvaptan blocks the vasopressin hormone effect (antidiuretic hormone- that helps to prevent water loss), decreases the amount of water in your body by increasing urine production, and, as a result, raises the concentration of sodium in your blood.
How to Use
Take a Vaptan 15mg Tablet exactly as directed by your doctor. Your doctor will provide the appropriate dose and frequency based on your medical condition and other factors. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Swallow the tablets whole with water. Have plenty of water and contact your doctor immediately. If you have taken an excess tablet than the prescribed dosage, don't double up the medicine if you forgot to take the medicine.
