Product Introduction
Zycort 40mg injection is an anti-inflammatory medication belonging to the glucocorticoid class, containing methylprednisolone as the active ingredient. It is indicated for inflammatory or allergic conditions affecting the brain (secondary to tumour or meningitis), lungs (secondary to asthma, hypersensitivity, tuberculosis, or aspiration of gastric contents), gastrointestinal tract, and bowel (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). It is also used in rheumatic, dermatological, ocular, and endocrine disorders. Zycort 40mg injection is used for palliative management of malignancies (leukaemia and lymphoma) and post-operative pain reduction. In higher doses, it is employed for acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis. Zycort 40mg injection should not be used if you have a fungal infection, cerebral oedema secondary to malaria, traumatic brain injury, or if you have recently received or are scheduled to receive any vaccination. Common side effects associated with this medicine include headache, vision disturbances, impaired wound healing, and bone weakness. Serious side effects may include venous thromboembolism in leg and pulmonary vasculature, and bleeding peptic ulcers. Report these side effects to your healthcare provider if they are concerning or persistent beyond the expected duration. This medication can produce several side effects related to electrolyte and fluid balance. When administered in large doses, these agents can elevate blood pressure, cause sodium and fluid retention, and increase potassium excretion. These effects are less pronounced with prolonged use or high-dose regimens. To mitigate these side effects, dietary sodium restriction and potassium supplementation may be warranted. Your healthcare provider will monitor your blood pressure, electrolyte levels, and renal function during corticosteroid therapy. Additionally, all corticosteroids increase urinary calcium excretion, which can lead to osteoporosis and elevated fracture risk with prolonged use. Your physician may prescribe calcium and vitamin D supplementation to maintain bone health during corticosteroid treatment. Inform your physician of all medications, herbal preparations, and supplements you are currently taking before commencing Zycort 40mg injection.

How it works
It works by binding to glucocorticoid receptors and inhibits the production of substances (such as prostaglandins) that lead to inflammation and allergies.

Expert Tips
Zycort 40mg injection can cause harm to a developing fetus or nursing baby, so it is important to discuss contraception options and the need to avoid breastfeeding during treatment. This drug can increase the risk of certain eye problems, such as posterior subcapsular cataracts and glaucoma. These conditions can lead to vision loss if not treated properly. Additionally, corticosteroids can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to secondary ocular infections caused by fungi or viruses. Therefore, it is important to use corticosteroids at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration to minimise the risk of these side effects. If you experience any changes in your vision or eye discomfort while taking Zycort 40mg injection or any other corticosteroid, it is important to inform your doctor right away.
