RAMUCIRUMAB

Background and Date of Approval

Ramucirumab is an anticancer medication containing the active ingredient Ramucirumab. It is a monoclonal antibody drug. Cancer is a condition in which cells multiply uncontrolled and abnormally. This medication is used to treat advanced gastric, colorectal, pulmonary, and hepatic cancers. It may be administered as monotherapy or in combination with other anticancer medications for the treatment of various cancer types. Ramucirumab functions by helping to reduce the growth and dissemination of cancer cells across different malignancies. Clinical studies have demonstrated that this medication can improve overall survival outcomes and extend the duration before cancer progression to advanced stages. Ramucirumab received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2014 for the treatment of advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma, and for the treatment of metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in combination with other anticancer agents.

Uses

Ramucirumab is used to treat several types of cancer, including advanced gastric cancer or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and colorectal cancer.

How is it administered?

A healthcare professional administers Ramucirumab through intravenous injection in a hospital or clinic setting. It is not intended for self-administration. The recommended dosage and frequency depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated, the individual patient's medical history, and overall health status. The drug is usually administered with chemotherapy or as a standalone treatment. If you miss a scheduled dose, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible to discuss the best course of action. Sometimes, your healthcare provider may recommend that you receive the missed dose as soon as possible and then resume the regular dosing schedule. However, this will depend on several factors, such as how long it has been since your last dose, overall health status, and cancer stage. It is important not to double the dose to make up for a missed dose, as this can increase the risk of side effects.

More serious side effects can include stomach or intestinal bleeding, blood clots, heart attack, stroke, infusion-related reactions, and impaired wound healing. Warnings

This medication can increase the risk of bleeding, including gastrointestinal bleeding and hemorrhage, and can also cause blood clots, which can be serious or life-threatening. This medication can also impair wound healing and should not be used in patients with open wounds or recent surgery. Patients with a history of hypertension or congestive heart failure should be closely monitored for signs of worsening their condition.

Precautions

Ramucirumab may cause hypertension, and patients with a history of high blood pressure should be monitored closely while using this medication. You should not use this drug if you are allergic to any of this medication's components. Patients with a history of bleeding disorders or blood clots should be monitored closely while using this medication. Patients who develop signs of bleeding or blood clots, such as unexplained bruising, blood in the urine or stool, or sudden chest pain or shortness of breath, should contact their healthcare provider immediately. Word of Advice

If you are considering Ramucirumab as part of your cancer treatment, discuss its potential benefits, risks, and side effects thoroughly with your healthcare provider. Although it may be an effective option for certain cancers, it can also involve important precautions.

Ramucirumab may increase the risk of bleeding, bruising, and infections. Take appropriate measures to reduce the risk of illness and injury, and maintain a healthy lifestyle to support your overall well-being during treatment.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to understand the potential risks and benefits. Effective contraception is generally recommended during treatment and for at least 3 months following the final dose because the medication may harm an unborn baby.

Throughout your treatment, maintain open communication with your healthcare team and seek emotional or practical support from family, friends, or other appropriate resources when needed.
