Background and Date of Approval
Romiplostim is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist which was approved for its medical use on 22nd August 2008.
Uses
Romiplostim Injection has been developed for adults and paediatric patients older than 1 year of age with immune thrombocytopenia, who have inadequately responded to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins and splenectomy.
How is it administered?
A healthcare professional will administer Romiplostim injection to the patients through subcutaneous route. Romiplostim is available as single-dose lyophilized powder for injection in the doses 125mcg, 250mcg and 500mcg. The initial recommended dose is 1mcg/kg body weight once a week. The dose will be further adjusted according to the platelet response.
Side Effects
The common side effects that are likely to occur while you are on the treatment with Romiplostim Injection are arthralgia, dizziness, insomnia, muscle pain, stomach pain, shoulder pain, dyspepsia, paraesthesia, bronchitis, sinusitis, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, cough, upper respiratory tract infection and oropharyngeal pain. If you experience any allergic reactions after taking this injection, report to your doctor immediately.
Warnings
Romiplostim injection is not recommended for patients with active bleeding, hypersensitivity and history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Tell your physician before taking this injection if you are allergic to Romiplostim, mannitol or any ingredients of this medicine. Your healthcare provider will regularly monitor your blood count (platelets) to alter the dosing accordingly. Inform your healthcare practitioner if you have blood clots or are diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, bleeding disorders, heart, lung, liver or kidney problems.
Precautions
Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to have a baby. Romiplostim injection is not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Word of Advice
It is advised to get adequate rest during the treatment. Eat a well-balanced diet. If you experience dizziness or any visual disturbances, you should avoid driving or handling machines. Apply cool compress at the injection site to reduce pain and irritation.
